Living Room Redesign

Here is a link to my photo album from one of my recent Interior Redesign and Color Consultations. My clients struggled with furniture placement and selecting the right colors to work with her existing pieces.

So, we addressed her focal point...err points in this case. She actually had 3! The fireplace, the tv and the view (they live on a golf course!). We successfully managed to create an intimate conversation area while working with the existing angles of the room.

She really wasn't too far off with her original color in the living room, all we had to do was darken it up a bit to create that warm and cozy feel she was after. I "measured" the color in the window treatments to make sure it coordinated with them just perfectly.

The kitchen was the biggest transformation. It was out with the old wallpaper and in with a new, fresh and clean color. The cabinets and counter tops were staying so that was our guide. Don't you love the new color?

We had a great time "shopping" her house for treasures. She had a lot of great pieces tucked away. It was so fun to see her reaction.

Next stop...the basement. We are doing some finishing touches to the media room and creating a family photo wall in the game room. Can't wait! I just love my job.

So You Think You're Crafty

Well, the auditions are posted at "So You Think You're Crafty" for the season 4 contest. And, yes, I like to craft with the best of them. I am one of the 13 hopefuls who loves to get down and crafty. Each week, contestants will submit their creations based on the theme and people will vote for their favorite. Only 10 get to participate. And, once you are voted out...game over!

Each project is listed anonymously so I can't tell you which one is mine. Rats!! But those who know my style and passion just may be able to figure it out.

Form vs. Function

My husband and I took a recent trip to Destin, FL. We toured the neighboring towns and landed in Watercolor, FL and Seaside, FL. I totally want to live in a town named Watercolor!

You may have heard of Seaside before since part of The Truman Show movie was filmed there, starring Jim Carey. We came across this interesting piece of architecture. It was a spiral staircase headed to nowhere. I immediately was like "hmmmm, is this form follows function or function follows form?" I assume you can see the ocean when you reach the top.

According to Wikipedia...
"Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design in the 20th century. The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose.

In the context of design professions form follows function intuitively seems like good sense, but on closer examination it becomes problematic and open to interpretation. Linking the relationship between the form of an object and its intended purpose is not always by itself a complete design solution. Defining the precise meaning(s) of the phrase 'form follows function' opens a discussion of design integrity that remains an important, lively debate."

I think this could strum up a "lively debate!" Interesting huh?

Charming Victorian for Rent in Winston Salem

This house had me at charming! I recently had the pleasure of helping a client update a charming Victorian which is conveniently located in Winston Salem. It has so much character. The fireplaces, yes that is correct, I said fireplaces, are so unique and beautiful. The rooms are also a good size and there is a lot of storage space to boot!

We updated with some fresh new colors throughout.

The kitchen is now so bright and cheery!

Down Home DIY - Family Style

It seems as soon as the temperature starts to rise, my need to redecorate and paint kicks into over drive. I don’t like to rush out to buy all new furniture. I simply reuse, refinish or repurpose the furniture that I already have. And, why not make it a family affair? So, this month we are focusing our Down Home DIY project on repainting furniture…Family Style.

So, let’s head on outside and give an old piece new life. What you’ll need: a piece of wood furniture, sandpaper (I prefer an electric sander), primer, paint color of choice, paint brushes, mini paint roller with a high density foam roller, clear polyurethane, rag and a drop cloth. I also recommend a mask and protective eye wear, especially for the little ones. Constant supervision and safety are a must. So, find a shady spot and let the games begin.

First, sand the piece of furniture by going with the grain of the wood. It is not necessary to remove the entire finish; however, the surface should feel fairly soft and even to the touch. The object is to create “tooth” on the surface to allow the primer to effectively “bite” onto the surface and adhere properly. My four year old loves to sand with the electric sander. Just use your best judgment as to the skill sets of your child. Safety first!
Once sanding is complete, thoroughly clean the surface with damp rag or dust cloth to remove all of the dirt and dust. Let dry.
Grab your primer (mix it well before opening) and a paint brush. I use the brush to get in all the nooks, crannies and corners. Then I use the roller brush for all the flat surfaces. Use long, smooth strokes. Paint over any drips or bubbles right away. Let dry.
Next apply your first coat of paint using the same technique and steps as the primer. Follow up with a second coat of paint if necessary. If you are feeling brave and adventurous you can do additional faux techniques to age the look of the piece either by sanding the edges or using an antique glaze.
Once the paint is completely dry, we want to protect your new masterpiece. I use clear polyurethane. I often do up to 3 coats. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions as to the proper dry time. You may need to sand in between coats for the optimal finish.

Safety Notes: Make sure to test for lead paint before you begin. Do not let your kids help remove any lead paint. A big No No! And I suggest using a Low or No VOC paint, especially if the little ones are helping. I typically use latex or acrylic, not oil based paints. And, I don’t recommend that kid’s help with the final sealing stage either. It is pretty potent so it is best to avoid it. Just tell them to run a few laps to see who finishes first.

Sanity Notes: I tend to be a perfectionist so if my kids are helping paint; I often let them do the backside of the piece where no one can see it. They don’t know the difference and they still get a wonderful sense of accomplishment. So, everyone is happy. You may want to start small, with a wood stool or bookshelf. Once you master it, move on to a larger piece with more substance. Paint will be your new best friend.

This is a photo of the finished piece at my occasional sale. It is silver with a gold, bronze and antique glaze. Very Hollywood Glam!

OK, so if i had to pick a dog house to be in, I would pick this one. It is made from reclaimed wood. I painted it a soft blue with a weathered looking finish. It can be used more traditionally outdoors or it makes for a VERY cool end table inside!

It is made for smaller dogs, no hubbies will fit in this dog house...sorry ladies!

Teacher Appreciation Week

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week for Mac, my Kindergartner. I always struggle with what to get. So I decided to make something instead. He has had a great year so I wanted to make something special and different, without breaking the bank. I had to make 7 total.

I just got a Cricut machine...totally loving it! I love antique keys so I used it to cut out some vintage looking keys on black cardstock.

Next I scanned a copy of the dictionary page with the definition of "teacher" on it. I then added the saying "Teachers hold the key to our future" and printed it out on cardstock. I aged the edges with a stamp pad after cutting it with pinking sheers. Glued on the key and put it in a black frame.

Voila...a unique teacher gift. I wrapped it in these adorable bags too.

I hope they liked them! It is just a little something to thank them for all that they do. We appreciate it more than they know.

I escaped to the Mountains to "reboot!"

I headed out of dodge for a few days with my boys. My hubby is playing, I mean "working", at the Final Four so me and the boys packed up and headed to "Camp Nana & Papa's".

They live on a lake in beautiful Brevard, NC. Dan will catch up with us on Sunday. He may be having fun at Final Four, but we think he is missing out!
So, I am pretty much out of touch for a few days. They only have dial-up...OUCH!!! I ducked out to the local coffee shop to upload pix for my hubby so he could see what we were up to. We had some great success fishing...even Mama snagged a big one. I had been huntin' this big ole catfish for at least three years. All it took was a little fresh air, kayaking and some fishing to cure my horrible migraine. Hope it doesn't come back!

Decoupage Easter Eggs - As seen on TV

Decoupage Easter Eggs

Embellish your Easter Eggs with some festive and seasonal images. For more dimension…go 3-D!

Supplies Needed To Decoupage Easter Eggs

Decoupage glue – I use Mod Podge
Easter Eggs (I used the ornament kind found at Home Goods, TJMax, Joann’s, etc. because they were pre-painted. But, if you are feeling adventurous, you can get plain ones to paint yourself)
Foam brushes
Small scissors
Decorative Paper: Scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, color copies, magazines, fabric etc. (I used butterflies found on the internet and printed them on a color laser)
Wax Paper
Sponge, soap and water
Glitter and Q-Tip (Optional)

Step 1

Protect your work surface with wax paper. Use the small scissors to cut out your image, I love manicure scissors because they are rounded. Do not leave any border, cut along the outline of your image.

Hot Tip: Turn the paper when you are cutting verses turning the scissors. It makes it easier.

Step 2

To attach a flat butterfly: Once cut, lay your image face down on the wax paper. Coat the back of your image with decoupage using a foam brush. Place the image on your Easter egg face up. Smooth out any air bubbles. Protect with a couple of coats of Mod Podge, allowing it to dry in between coats.

Step 3

Move over Avatar we are going 3-D!

How to attach a 3-D butterfly: Once cut, Fold the cutout along center. I usually make two folds leaving about 1/8” of the center so there is more flat surface to glue. Apply glue to the flat, folded surface and adhere it to the egg. If you want to make it double sided, just glue two butterfly images back to back then do the same fold and glue process. Let dry.

For a little more bling, add some glitter before you adhere the image to the egg. Coat the edges of your image with Mod Podge using a Q-Tip for more precision. Sprinkle with glitter and shake off the excess.

Let dry.

Hang your eggs or display them in baskets to enjoy. I hung mine on a beautiful heather plant I got at Fresh Market.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

OK, so I was very excited about this project, and still am, but I just hit a little bump in the road.

Can you tell what this carcass is? It is all the pieces to an old whiskey barrel. I am making a coffee table. I found the perfect wood top that I painted with a faux finish and was very happy with how it turned out.

Then I was cleaning the inside of the barrel and sealing it when WHAM!... this happened. The support rings came loose and then all the slats caved in on themselves. Man I hate when that happens! It was like a domino effect in slow motion. I wish someone captured it on video because my reaction would have been priceless. I was like "Noooooooooo!!!!"....and was diving to catch them all before they fell. Classic Oopsy Daisy.

I was so close to being finished. It is impossible to get it back together by myself, I figured this out after many tries $%@&!!!! So I guess I need to enlist the help of my hubby to put it all back together. I now know how Humpty Dumpty feels.

Stay tuned for the completed project. I think it will be very cool and worth all the hiccups.

Canvas People

So I had seen an ad from Canvas People for a ridiculously great sale on photographic canvas portraits. I had never used them before so I thought I would give it a whirl. I decided to use one of my favorite photographs. This is on of my favorites that I took in Charleston, SC. Both dogs have since passed so it is pretty special.

About 1 week later, I just got my 8x10 canvas in the mail and it was fabu. It was the thick kind with the image wrapped around the sides. I don't think I will frame it. I think I will leave it as is.

They do a great job and yes, I would buy from them again.

It is easier being Green than you might think

Finding eco-friendly furniture may be easier than you think. I was doing research for a column and came across this resource. Check out The Forest Stewardship Council 's (FSC) website. According to the site, this is what the FSC is

"Driven in part by the failure of an intergovernmental process to agree on a global forest compact, and the compelling question — what is sustainable forestry? — loggers, foresters, environmentalists, and sociologists came together in the first General Assembly to form the FSC in 1993."

They have a database of retailers who sell items with the FSC label. The label indicates that the wood is made from recycled or sustainable wood, thus good for the environment. I was surprised to see so many well known retailers listed like Crate and Barrel, Lowe's, Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Walmart, etc. It was kind of a pleasant surprise.

I was curious if I went to these sites how easy it would be to find items with the FSC label. I did a test on Pottery Barn and came up with this:

The FSC encourages us to look for and ask for the FSC label when shopping to help encourage retailers and manufacturers to offer more FSC-certified products. Sounds good to me, how 'bout you?

Must be love...

Hearts are all a flutter and love is in the air...and on my entry table. I wanted to create some playful decorations in honor of Valentine's Day.

I went to my stash to see what I could create. Hmmm, so what would Cupid say. Easy...L-O-V-E. I found some left over wood in my garage. Chopped it up in varying heights with my miter saw. Added a little red paint. I decoupaged the dictionary page featuring the definition of "love" on it. Then, I added the individual letters of L-O-V-E to help deliver Cupid's message.

It was a simple project but one that delivers a big heartfelt message.

Furniture Feature: Mix and Mingle

I love to mix odd pieces together to create unique furniture. I found this old trunk/box awhile ago and have been searching for a nice set of legs to go with it. I finally found some. And, might I say, these legs are Rockette worthy.

It is the base to an old sewing table. I see a lot of them but they are usually a little pricey. This set was only $5 because the foot pedal was broken.

I just took that part off and kept the rest intact. I debated whether I wanted to refinish it and finally decided to repaint them with an Oil Bronze finish. I am glad I did. It coordinates well with some of my black furniture pieces in the living room.

My original plan was to use it as a sofa table, but it was too tall. So I put it in my front bay window instead, which is kind of dead space in my house. A little added bonus about this piece is that it can either be displayed open our closed.

Right now I am displaying it open. It has some fun vintage fabric and funky green paint on the inside. I may change that down the road, but for right now I am going with it.

French Cottage, Flea Market, Shabby Chic...Oh My!

I found a great new shop from Twitterland. Check out The Inglenook Decor. There are quite a few things that have caught my eye.

I thought this plate rack would actually make a cool photo rack. You could either place them on the shelf or use ribbon to hang them from the hooks.

How cute is this bird towel stand? Birds are the trend right now and this is top of the list for me.

And, I am addicted to cool vintage looking baskets. I love the vintage ones as much as reproductions.

Maureen, the brains and braun behind the shop and blog, is a savvy and entrepreneurial woman who is following her passion and we get the benefit from her labor. We get to shop all of the great goodies she finds. She has a great mix of French Cottage meets Flea Market Finds.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a great site for my Hot Tip Tuesday Post. No, I don't personally know her or get any perks for spreading the love. I simply love her eclectic little mix so I wanted to pass it along! I always like to support fellow female fempreneurs, don't you?

A new product that is "chalk" full of fun

Well, color me happy with the new chalkboard paint from RustOleum. I loved chalkboard paint before, but this stuff rocks my world.

Here is an overview that I pulled from their site:

Would Thomas Edison be Proud?

I had posted the before shot of all the parts to my first ever lamp that I made from scratch last Thursday.

Well here are the afters.

There were a few expletives along the way and one poof of smoke, but by George I think I got it.

The "Hero" fire extinguisher was my inspiration. I loved the graphics and the name says it all. I found one book that said "Courage is not Given." The other book is one that I made up myself with my printer and scrapbook paper. It is actually a faux book but was perfect to be able to run all the wired through it and secure the lamp body.

I was searching for other unique pieces to use and I found this vintage fire hose nozzle. It came from the RJR building here in Winston Salem. It makes for a perfect lamp body.

The second time was a charm. After the poof of smoke, I had to start all over again and rewire it. The good news is that I learned a whole heck of a lot. And now I can take "Make a lamp from scratch" off my list of things to do. And yes, I will be at it again real soon, knowing that the next one will be so much easier. I already found the lamp body for my next one so stay tuned for lamp #2.

A Throw Back to My Youth. . .Take a Little Trip with me.

LOW RIDER...Take a little trip, take a little trip with me."

My mom posted this photo on Facebook. It is of me and my older Sis. Please divert your eyes away from my pants for a second to check out my Dad's handy work. I know, my pants are captivating. My flare for fashion did not come until later in life. Or so I'd like to think.

I wanted to share my Dad's craftiness, especially for those who have children. This masterpiece was created with recycled cardboard, some paint and a couple of clothespins. I guess we can see where I get some of my craftiness from, huh?

Talk about some tricked out Big Wheels. They are a Sopwith Camel & Fokker Triplane, or so I am told - I don't know which is which. My Dad is a big airplane aficionado, so he made these for us for a Bike Parade. We were too cool for school. My Dad totally rocked it.

Just wanted to share a throw back moment from my youth and some retro fun! Maybe you can make something like it for your little ones. I know I am going to give it a whirl.

New Year, New Resolutions

Happy New Year! I hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday season. With the new year ringing in, so too comes the resolutions. Many people set goals to improve their health, weight, finances and even your home. Ugh, the pressure!

The doors are open and Mama is home!

The artwork is hung on the walls with care

in hope some visitors soon would be there!

I have officially moved into my studio space and the door is now open. The shelves are filled, my supplies are organized and I am ready to create!

Here are some photos of my space. The left side is my workshop where I am up to my ears in glue, paint, etc.

The right side and walls are all items that are for sale. I tried to make the most out of my 10x14 space. I think I pretty much utilized every square inch of it.

I am still giddy over the thought of actually having studio space. And I can't wait to see what becomes of it! If you are in the area, please come to Studios at 625 Trade Street in Downtown Winston Salem. Call for hours!

This is the year to be creative

Floor canvas by Canvasworks Floorcloths

As some of you know, a whole new world opened up for me when I moved to Winston Salem, the "City of the Arts". I took a Painted Floorcloth class at a local art center, www.sawtooth.org. It was like cracking a code and the artist in me was unleashed. So, my hope for you is that this is the year to continue or start to try new things. Find a passion and pursue it. Be not afraid.

Don't have a local art center or college that offers classes near you? Search online. I recently found this online Painted Floorcloth Class at Canvasworks FloorCloths. It is only $40 and you can do it from your own home. At that price, what do you have to lose? Nothing, but you have so much to gain. And, you can even take the class in your favorite jammies!

Here are some other online classes worth checking out:
Beaducation - Great website that teaches jewelry classes from beginner to advanced.
Universal Class This site is a good resource that has topics ranging from Digital photography to cake decorating and more. Awesome!
Ed2Go - A website that offers classes for business, personal, technology, etc.

I am the Energizer Bunny when it comes to Holiday Decorating

I'm still going! Yes, like my title indicates, I am like the energizer bunny when it comes to holiday decorating. I keep going and going and going...

Here is another little holiday project that I made. I was inspired by Candy over at Junk Sophisticate. She posted a beautiful project using an old window last year and I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Check out her site, you will find a ton of great ideas for holiday decorating and more. She has the best style and the most clever ideas! Tell her hey for me!

Well, I have had these old windows for awhile and finally got around to using them. I made a couple and sold them at my Whimsical Women show. Here is one that I sold. I loved the retro green paper. It had splashes of red in it and was perfect for the holidays.

But this one with the red paper, I made to keep. I took down my everyday art and hung this in its place for the holidays instead.

I used paper, ornaments, greenery ribbon and some crystals for bling. The greenery is a mix of faux and real. I like how it turned out, so many thanks to my creative little friend Candy for the inspiration! I think of her every time I look at this piece.

May the spirit of the holidays keep going and going and going throughout the new year.

Merry and Bright

I love how silver, glass and crystal looks when it reflects light. Don't you? I especially love it on my Christmas tree. How lovely are these branches?

I bought these new mercury glass ornaments this year and just love them. They came in two different shapes as seen here.

These disco balls are a shout out to the fact that I was born in the 70's. Mama always said, it isn't polite to ask someones age, so don't ask! I bought some last year at Target but I found some more this year at Dollar General to add to my collection.

I also found this snowflake at Dollar General. Much to my delight it looks almost identical to an ornament in the Pottery Barn catalog which costs a whole heck of a lot more! Sweet.

And, here is the cherry on top. I added a wood sign that I made at the top. It looks great with the bright red wood star.

I also bought tin stars from Dollar General and spray painted them red. I tucked them inside the tree to add more cherry pops of color peeking through the branches.

I just love this season!

Friday Favorite Website

Today my favorite website is Country Livin g. It is just chock full of amazing holiday decorating and craft ideas. So, a riddle for you. What is black and white and red all over? A newspaper! Ha! Funny, huh? I know, it is supposed to be "read" but that would have been too easy for you to figure out so I typed it like it sounds.

Two of my favorite projects are fun things to do with newspaper. I am going green today so I am showcasing fun projects to recycle and repurpose.

The first is a wreath.

According to Country Living: To make this wreath, cover a foam floral wreath base with newspaper "flowers." To make a flower, cut a 4" x 4" square from three pages of newspaper. Fold the stack in accordion fashion, trim, and then tie with floral wire in the center. Spread the petals and then hot-glue to base. Repeat steps until wreath base is covered; you will need about 40 flowers. For the bow, cut several 12" paper strips. Form loops with each strip, gather a bouquet, and secure with wire. For streamers, cut long strips and fold in accordion fashion. Hot-glue bow and streamers to wreath.

The second is a very funky way to wrap presents Jessica Murname a stationer in Chicago. I have wrapped with newspaper before but never got all funkified and made such a cool embellishment. Now that's what I call a full loom!

Their instructions for making this nifty little package are as follows:

Make Jessica Murnane's Newspaper Bloom

1. Stack eight sheets of newsprint and cut into an 8" square.

2. Accordion-fold the stack into 1" increments.

3. Next, cut four pieces of ribbon to a length of 8".

4. Unfold the paper slightly and rest a piece of ribbon in each crease (if you end up with more than four folds, you'll need to cut additional ribbon).

5. Gather the folds back together and pinch the center of the paper tightly (it will look like a bow tie), binding it with a rubber band.

6. Starting from the top, peel up each layer of newspaper, scrunching it together as you go. Finally, curl the ribbon to make a cluster in the topper's center.

I apologize for selecting this as my favorite because I know you will get sucked in like I did and surf until your heart is content, which for me was the length of an Intense Movie my hubby and I just watched.

Vintage Holiday Vignette

Here is my holiday vignette set up on my secretary desk. It has a few elements that I really love.

1. The guest book. OMG. I love it. It is made of wood and the pages are old and it is just fabulous. I found it at Goodwill. It was an awesome find.

2. The vintage light is just plain ole fun.

3. I believe this was an old stamp holder but it is now a vintage ornament holder.

4. Lanterns and oil lamp. The oil lamp was my Grandmothers so of course it is very special.

5. The small frames in the first photo are photographs that I took after a beautiful snow storm in New England a few years ago.

More Holiday Decor

Here is a little vignette that I easily updated from my fall decor to a festive little holiday vignette. You can look back at my Fall Back Decor Post to see what it looked like before. I used the cute mini desk as the base of my display, along with my favorite old "Yankee Girl" crate. I wrapped the package using brown kraft paper and Green twine. I added a fun tag that has the #25 on it for bling and used ink stamps to spell out "To Santa". Check out my little elf. I found him at Goodwill. He is kind of one of those things where he is so ugly he is so cute. My kids love that he moves. I loved that he had the saw, it was so me!

To make holiday decorating easier, have pieces in your house that are a good foundation, like my mini desk and cool crate. You can easily remove, add and embellish for each season.

If you look at my Fall Back Decor Post you will be able to see how I used the same bench and basket on my front steps that I featured in yesterdays post but added seasonal greenery and festive elements for Christmas. Compare it to my "What Gives Post yesterday to see the basic elements that were used and how I embellished them for this holiday season.

What Gives?

I often get asked "How do you do it?" "It" meaning run my own business, take care of my boys, deal with a traveling husband, blog, write articles, do art shows, etc. Well, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I can't do "it" all. So what gives? Well, most of the time it is my house. Don't ever come over unannounced. Sometimes it is the laundry... as a matter of fact Mount Washmore is screaming my name. Sometimes it is my blog. I haven't posted since Dec. 2nd. Sometimes it is my sanity, nothing a little wine and chocolate can't fix. So to make you all feel better, sometimes I just don't do "it" and I am OK with that. I am only human. I give up things where I can and keep on plugging away at all that needs to be done!

Right now, I am slowly but surely getting my Christmas decorations up. The key word is "getting". Here is my front door entry. I will try to post all my little displays and vignettes once a day between now and Christmas, that is if I get my decorations finished between now and Christmas! I figured I would start at the front door...

I layered and used a bunch of different elements. The bench and the basket were used in my "Fall Back Decor" display. I just changed it out for seasonal greens, a package to Santa and a tree topper.

I found the old sled at a garage sale a few years ago and I can't wait to take it out each year to put on display. I love it! The snow balls were my concoction last year when my boys were so bummed it didn't snow as much in NC as it does at Grammy and Peepaw's. I added the Let it Snow sign this year just for kicks.

So, what gives with you? Or are you SuperWoman?

These were a hit at our recent Whimsical Women Art Show. All the artists bring food for our guests. This one was lovingly created by artist Holly LaPonte. She makes pottery. A couple of my friends requested the recipe so she was gracious enough to share it.

Peanut Butter Balls

Ingredients

• ½ cup Karo Light Corn Syrup

• 2 cups honey nut peanut butter

• 2 cups graham cracker crumbs

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted

Directions

1. Combine Karo, peanut butter, graham crackercrumbs and powdered sugar in a large bowl and stir until smooth.

2. Shape into 1 inch balls. Place on wax paper lined cookie sheet

3. Drizzle melted chocolate over balls or dip balls in melted chocolate. Chill for 30 minutes to set chocolate.

Friday Favorite: Historic Charleston, SC

Have you ever been to Charleston, SC? If not, I suggest you go there. It is a beautiful historic town. Here are a few of my favorite sites on my visit.

I loved this sign...It is the polite way of saying "Yo, get off my lawn!"

Look at how these vines/branches grow around the wrought iron fence. Amazing!

The greenery and foliage is gorgeous. The branches and limbs grow in the most unique manor.

I loved the setting of this house. Doesn't it look like it could be on the cover of a best selling novel?

I love the overgrown grass with the isolated tree. They were perfectly and randomly placed throughout this new neighborhood. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are building a new house on it. I am so jealous!

A pineapple fountain just welcoming all those who visit.

I love these lanterns. They are everywhere.

It was a beautiful day to talk a stroll on the Battery.

OK, I could retire here. I would love to relax on this hammock at sunset. Breathtaking views!

Thanksgiving Celebration - Southern Style

Whoa! I am kicking back with my feet up after my post Thanksgiving Feast food coma. We celebrated with family in Charleston, SC. Lucky me, huh? I love this city and being able to spend time with family.

Our feast started with an out of this world Pan Seared Oyster appetizer (recipe below).

Then we celebrated in a Southern Style fashion, complete with a Fried Turkey with a "Jive Turkey" rub.

For sides we had squash casserole (we omit the egg and milk), Green Bean Casserole, mashed potatoes, Sweet Potato Crunch (no marshmallows here!),

Cranberry & Apricot Chutney (I use Golden Raisins, thinly slice the apricots and omit ginger), Corn Bread Dressing (we added finely chopped carrots too), Butter Beans, sweet rolls, Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish. Like I said...Whoa! Oh, I almost forgot the Pickled Pears - say that 10 times fast. These were new to me. But they were pretty darn good. I thought it would be great used in a Peach Crisp dessert.

We are now onto Pecan Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Nana's Chocolate Chip Cookies and Ice Cream. I told you we had a feast!

Hot Panned Oysters

1 qt select oysters

1/4 lb. oyster crackers

1/4 lb butter

1/4 large stalk celery (5 pieces) chopped VERY fine

3T Worchestershire

20 shakes Tabasco sauce

lots of salt and black pepper and paprika

Preheat oven to 350 for 20 minutes. Don't wash oysters, but remove any pieces of shell. Drain well in a colander. Into a shallow Pyrex baking dish, put the butter - put in the oven until pan is hot and butter very melted. Into butter drop a layer of oysters, a layer of finely chopped celery, a layer of the four condiments (salt, pepper, Tabasco & Worch. sauce). Top with a layer of oyster crackers that have been crushed to the size of your little fingernail. Repeat layers in same order. Sprinkle paprika freely over the top. Bake oysters for one hour. If juices remain, keep cooking until all are absorbed. Serve very hot in same pan. Don't stir. The oysters have their own juices sealed in by being dropped in the scalding hot butter.

Holy Christmas these are good! We talked about things we could substitute for oysters which can get pricey. We came up with eggplant ad scallops. The topping is so good you will know why we were trying to come up with more creative uses for it. Man, my mouth is watering just writing about them. YUM!

Front Door Holiday Decor

I typically like to celebrate the holidays in a very traditional manor. But, I like to decorate my front door with something other than the typical fresh holiday wreath. I like it to be a little more creative and unique. Here are two of my favorites:

The first one is an old frame from Habitat Restore. I just embellished it with live greens, ribbon and some festive ornaments.

The second one is my favorite. It was something I found in the clearance section at a furniture store. It was soooo ugly but I had a vision from the shape of it. I faux finished it with some paint and added some twigs for arms and a wide grosgrain ribbon for a scarf. Voila...Frosty the Snowman is born. (p.s. the furniture salesman looked at me like I had 10 heads when I told him what I was doing with it...little did he know!)

I will be sharing a lot of fun holiday decorations over the next few weeks. I sold both of these at my Whimsical Women art show. I will have more of the frames for sale but I can't find any more of the ugly frames. Bummer!

This is how I roll

OMG! I survived a crazy week. It kicked my butt, but I survived. I taught my Holiday Decorating Class Thursday night and Friday morning. Much fun. Then had our big Whimsical Women Art Show on Saturday. Needless to say, Friday night was a late night prepping. I was up until 2:30 gluing, making bows, etc. And then had to get up at 5:30. (Ouch, that'll leave a mark!) But even in all the madness, I love every minute of it and wouldn't change a thing. It is what makes me tick.

And it helps when you go to bed at 6PM and don't wake up until 6AM. I totally crashed after the show on Saturday and slept for 12 hours. Crazy huh? Mama needed her zzzz's!

Anyway, here is just one of my crafty little concoctions that I sold at the Whimsical Women show. These are for decorative purposes only. (Yes, I actually got asked if they could be used...Really? They are covered in paper) I just thought they would be cute on display in a kitchen. The rolling pins were painted and decoupaged with pretty paper. I tied a ribbon around them with a tag that reads "This is How I Roll"! I will have some for sale on Etsy in the next week or two. Just a simple little project I wanted to share. I thought they were fun.

The people came in droves to the show so overall it was a HUGE success. There was a merry little buzz going on! (Literally, we provide wine and beer!). And a little Peppermint Schnapps in your hot cocoa never hurt anyone...even at 7:30am. 'Tis the season to be jolly right!?

2010 Color of the Year

Well, Colour Futures has picked the 2010 Color of the Year.

Drum roll...the color in an airy and optimistic blue.

The color is pure and clean. Airy, light blues are great for reducing stress. You often find this color at spas and retreats because they are known to be refreshing and calming. I just painted a basement a shade of blue and my client says it makes her feel week in the knees. She wanted something that was calming and soothing so my mission was accomplished! Once I get the room complete, I will post a picture.
This photo above is from Country Living via sensationalcolor.com. We are seeing blue used more and more in kitchens. Typically it has been a color that has not been recommended but all rules are meant to be broken. I love this blue paired with the white and silver.

Here is another photo via sensationalcolor.com. This room is designed by Candice Olson. If you don't want to commit your walls to the blue color you can still get the same feeling by incorporating it into your furniture and accessories as seen here. I love the blue and green color combo. I assume these colors were inspired by nature, specifically the sky and grass.

So, I second the motion for airy and optimistic blue as the color of the year. I am all for a color that is re-energizing and symbolizes a fresh start. Here's to the new Blue and all it stands for in 2010 and beyond.

Sit and Stay for a Spell

I just love a bargain and snatched these great chairs up at a 50% off sale at Habitat Restore. I loved the size, shape and design but wasn't in love with the color, at least not for my space. I knew exactly where they would be set up after a simple cosmetic makeover.

My inspiration? I have a beautiful side table passed down to me that was my Grandmother's. I think it was even my Great Grandmother's. I love that it is black because I feel like that is pretty unique to the times. It is displayed in the bay window area of my living room. I knew I wanted chairs to flank it but had not found the right ones until now. The bay window area is kind of dead space so this serves as a secondary seating area that one can sit and stay for a while. The sunset views from these chairs are amazing!

So, they are now resting peacefully next to my sentimental piece after just a little sanding, priming and painting with a glossy black finish. I love them!

How to keep your sanity while moving with kids

I was recently asked to guest blog again for Triad Smarty Pants. It is the local "go to" website for families in the Winston Salem area. It has great parenting tips, event info. etc. Katie, one of the creators, is in the midst of moving so I gave her some tips to help keep her sanity.

Moving boxes, I have a love-hate relationship with them. I HATE them because they take forever to load and unpack are often at a time of upheaval in your life. I LOVE them because they provide hours of entertainment for the kids while Mamasita diligently tries to get life back in some sense of order. So, if you’ve got kids, here are some tips to keep your sanity. Save the boxes, after you move. I repeat, save the boxes! They help entertain your children while you put all your belongings in your new home. What can you do with the boxes you say? Well here are just a few crazy ideas I came up with for our two boys.

1. If You Build It, They Will Play. Save the big boxes to make a castle or fort. Of course most of you have seen this or done it before. But take it two steps further. You can use a razor knife to cut out windows and a door for the kids. Give the kids stickers, markers, crayons, etc. to decorate. Draw flowers, add faux flowers, etc. Let them go to town! Speaking of town…Make a whole town! Post Office, Fire Department, etc. The opportunities are endless. It may take you a little time to help build the initial foundation, but it is so worth it!

2. I like to Move It, Move It. Medium sized ones are great for making cars or trains. You can add a steering wheel to the car buy using a paper or plastic plate. Cut a small hole in the center, get rope and put through the hole. Tie a knot so the rope won’t slip back through. Make another hole in the box where you want the steering wheel to go. Put the other end of the rope through that hole to the outside of the box. Tie another knot leaving about an inch or two of slack in between so the wheel can move. Glue four plates on for wheels and again decorate. You can do the same for the train with the wheels and decorations. But how the heck does one drive a train? Not sure, is it a steering wheel? Lever? I think a lever. Maybe try an empty paper towel holder for a lever. Follow the same process as the steering wheel but I would use less slack so it is not as loose, but you still want to move. Another option for the steering wheel and lever is to use a nut and bolt to attach them if you have some spare ones on hand. Just make sure they move. Action and movement are good, it entertains longer.

3. Chalk It Up for Some Fun! Cut up the big/long boxes and lay them flat. Give the kids some chalk. For some reason, it is more entertaining to use chalk on the cardboard than a chalkboard or sidewalk. Who knew?

4. Snap, Crackle, Pop. Popping paper is a dream for regular ‘ole popping. It seems like everything is a “race” in my house. Have them race to see who can pop it all first. Or, lay some larger pieces on the ground and you can have them ride their bike or tricycle over it. They think it is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

5. “What’s in the box, what’s in the box, we gotta find out what’s in the box!” (I will give a prize to the first person who comments and tells me where that song is from! Seriously!) You need at least two children to play (or you can join in if you want a time-out from all the unpacking)! Have one person look around the room and memorize what is there. Next have them close their eyes. The second person removes an item from the room and puts it in the box. Have the person open their eyes and try to guess what is in the box. You can give clues if they can’t guess. A great memory game.

6. Free Labor. That sounds awful I should be more P.C. and say “Lend a Hand”. Give them a box to help pack. Kids love to help! Some kid friendly items to let them pack: Plastic Tupperware is good and can’t be broken. Kitchen utensils, minus anything sharp. Off season clothes -just be prepared for some extra wrinkles when you take them out! Stuffed animals, towels, etc.

7. Going Postal. My kids played this one for hours. Get a box big enough for your child to fit in. Have one child get in the box and close the top. The other child pretends they just got home to find a great big package waiting for them. My kids said “A package for me? Hmmm, I wonder what could be in this box!?” They open the top and the other child jumps up and yells “SURPRISE!” I know it seems so superficial but I seriously can’t count how many times they took turns doing it.

8. Hide and Seek. Get a number of different boxes. Have the tops open and place them upside down with the opening on the floor. You need two players. Have one kid close their eyes and count to 20. Have the other child hide under one of the boxes. The first child opens their eyes and tries to guess which one they are in. They lift the boxes to check each one. If boxes are too big to lift, you can have them upright and just close all the tops, the seeker just opens the lids to find them. Either way, find them and yell “SURPRISE!” Yes, yelling makes it more fun.

9. We’re Going on a Color Hunt. You will need 5 small boxes. Get a red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple crayon or marker. Have them decorate one box with the red marker/crayon, the next box with the blue, etc. Next have each of them go on a hunt for “X” # of items that are red, then blue, then green, etc. Do one color at a time. Put the red items in the red box, the blue in the blue, etc. And, pick up isn’t so bad because can each pick one color at a time, carry the box with them as they put the items back where they found them.

So, if you are moving, I feel your pain! It is such a huge undertaking and even more so when you have small children to entertain. I hope a couple of these games help to put a smile on both you and your children’s faces and make the whole process a little less stressful. Good luck!

Fall Back Decor

I have a love hate relationship with the Fall. I love the weather and all the beautiful colors of nature. I also enjoy creating festive fall vignettes too. But I do not like turning the clocks back. The 5am wake up calls from the kids kills me every year. Waking up to total darkness really hurts!

But, back to my "love" part of Fall. Here is an outdoor fall display I created mixing old and new. I found this great basket at a garage sale. I thought Mum's would fit perfectly in it. My mom got the old bench for free. So cool. I like how it raises the basket up so you can see it better. I am digging the metal pumpkins. They don't grow mold like our current Jack-0-lantern now turned furry science experiment does! The Pick Your Pumpkin sign is a couple of years old but I still love it. And I just picked up the wheel at Michael's yesterday on clearance. It was the perfect piece to fill in that spot. This is set up on my front steps so it makes me happy every time I come home.

I also created a little indoor vignette in my entry.

I found this great old mini school desk. I thought it would get a lot of use because I can use it as my foundation and change out my seasonal decor.

The old crate is a shout out to my northern upbringing. I am a Damn Yankee! But, just for the record it does not mean I am a Yankee fan...I grew up outside of Boston so I am a Red Sox Fan. I mixed faux and fresh veggies and put them in the crate. I like to layer to add more intesest when decorating.

Friday Favorite Tool

I just wanted to share a cool new tool that is a must have in your tool box. It's called the MagnoGrip Wristband. You can get it at Home Depot. First of all, it's pink so of course I love it. Living with 3 boys under my roof makes me love anything pink.

Second, how fun is this packaging? Lovin' the bling! So darn cute.

Third, it is very handy. I used it while I was working on my room for Habitat Restore. I put the screws that I needed on it and went to town. Everything was within reach, no fumbling around or having them hanging out of my mouth. Easy peasy. You an also use it for sewing but I haven't tried it yet.

I felt like Wonder Woman wearing it. I got lots of comments on it...I told them it gave me the power! Tee hee.

Check them out. It is like having an extra set of hands and we could all use that! Just wanted to share my fun little find!

Redesign - Use What you Have Decorating

I just completed a redesign yesterday with Ava. The homeowner struggled with one wall in particular so she called us in for help. The cathedral ceiling came to a point in the center of the room. But she didn't think she could center her TV on that wall because she felt her furniture wouldn't fit. We used 100% of her pieces and didn't add a single thing, thus the reason we call it "use what you have decorating."

Here is the before shot. You can see the TV is off to the right a bit.

We changed out the art above the TV and added different accessories. The artwork had a basket of apples and a blue and white bowl in it so we mimicked this look with our accessories. It looks great in the room. She has a vast collection of baskets so she was thrilled we worked them into the design. Don't you love this funky lamp? It was in a guest room so we brought it out to the Living Room instead. So unique.

Here is the mantel and room layout before...

We opted to use two pieces of art above the mantel vs. the one because we liked the subject matter better. We also loved the two peacocks and wanted them more visible so we put them front and center on the mantel.

Well, we centered the TV and still fit all the furniture to make it more cozy. The room was long but not very wide so we had to angle the pieces. It worked. It looked really nice, this picture doesn't do it justice. It flowed much better and made it more inviting! We cranked it too. We finished this redesign in 2 hours and 45 minutes. So she got a whole new room for under $300. How do you like them apples?

We also hung some artwork going up the stairs, which is always a challenge. But, with a trust laser you can do anything!

Repurpose this from Restore Spaces

Sue Whitney of Junk Market Style gave me great advice. She said when you are looking at something turn it upside down, inside out, frontwards, backwards, etc. and then see what you can really do with it. So I wanted to share that tip with you because it is a good one.

Well, I took her advice to heart. I had the bright idea to turn this outdoor light fixture into a pencil and paintbrush holder. I simply took the light socket part out and turned the glass globe upside down so the opening was at the top. Voila, a cool new storage piece from my workbench.

This was part of my room at the Habitat Restore Spaces Event. So, with that in mind, I got some questions/comments on my other Restore Spaces Event post on Monday so I figured I would answer them here.

Restore Spaces Event FAQ

How did I hear about this event? Just stumbled upon it while shopping at the Habitat Restore last year. This was my second year. I learned a lot from my rookie year in '08. But I was hooked! My room won two awards last year. Here is an older post with some photos of the 2008 Restore Spaces Event.

Who runs the event? Our local Realtors Association runs the event along with a committee at Habitat. We get a large number of sponsors both financial and in-kind. It is a big undertaking! Ask your local Habitat Restore if they do anything like this, if not start your own. I will happy to share info. if anyone needs it! I am sure the committee would too.

Did I paint the walls or cover them with fabric? I learned last year that particle board just eats up the paint. So, I covered them with commercial grade wallpaper. Last year I painted the wallpaper, this year I found one that had flecks of grey in it so I left it as is. I then layered another style of decorative wallpaper over that for my main focal wall. Both were found at the Restore. They grey top layer was kinda cool. It looked like a pin stripe suit.

Will people buy the items in the room? Yes, it all is for sale the night of the event and beyond. We price it after it has been refinished, and mark it up from its original price. I loved work table so much that I bought it! Now to clear a space in my garage. All the money raised goes to Habitat for Humanity which helps build houses for the less fortunate in our area.

Some more event tidbits...

Each designer gets a different themed room. We had 8 designers. It is luck of the draw. I pulled #2 so I picked the craft room/workshop since it is near and dear to my heart. We can pick whatever we want as long as no one else has picked it that type of room. We had a kitchen, kids bedroom, sunroom, living room, laundry room, outdoor space and dining room. I will post pix of the other rooms later this week!

I won the Judges Choice for Restore Spaces 2009!

OK, have you missed me? I didn't post much last week because I was hard at work designing for a charity event at the Habitat Restore. The event is called Restore Spaces. If you like the White Room Challenge on Design Star, you'll love this event too. We get three blank particle board walls and the chance to shop the Habitat Restore. We reuse, refinish and repurpose to create our space. I designed a craft/workshop room...my dream room! Here is one of my shopping trips and my cart full of goodies that were looking for a makeover.

Here is a photo of the cart that I turned into an end table and lamp that I repainted. My colors were white, grey and celery green. You can see them refinished in the photo below this one.

These oval frames were gold to start but nothing like a little upgrade with spray paint. I wanted funky artwork so I hung tools for a 3-D effect. I borrowed a Cricut again to cut out the letters (I think I know what I am asking for at Xmas!)
So, Goldilocks didn't like the way these chairs looked so I repainted them and added a small detail. Check the other photos for the after shots.

Here are the chairs with some celery green paint and some new numbers. Goldilocks thinks Chair #1 is just right. The old crib bed spring is perfect to display my before photos. The desk is an old door that I hung with brackets and then added the legs for support and decoration.

The grab bars below are now fabric remnant holders, the chair and sewing machine were painted. I added the # just because.

This was the biggest piece in my room. Here is the workbench before I painted it a smoky grey and white. I added cool new hardware and a ton of fun repurposed storage holders. I will blog about the details in another post.

This is me after celebrating winning the Judge's Choice Award. You can see the above workbench now that is has been made over. I was so psyched to have been picked by the judges and really enjoyed myself that night! All the money goes to helping build houses for the less fortunate in our community. Fun time had by all!

Office Decor - Thrift Store Style

Here are some examples of how you can decorate your office on a dime. Well, not really a dime but not so much either.

The desk was my main feature in the room. I wanted a "his and her" style desk. I looked for a more traditional writing desk but when I found this wicker table at Habitat Restore I knew it would be perfect. It didn't have glass or anything so I cut two pieces of wood and painted them Dark Truffle. I really like how it turned out.

The book shelf was fun to accessorize too. I totally love the vintage lunch box and thermos. It is so old school and so cool.

The jumbo scissors are just plain fun! They are propped up with a super sized nuts. OK, that just sounds so silly. But I found them at CB2. They were unique and are just my speed.

The cabinet door samples with hardware were a road side find. There were four display boards filled with them. I salvaged them from the sample board. I plan to make cool boxes out of them, but they look great on display too. The colors are fabu. Seriously, who would throw these things out? Oh well, their loss, my gain.

Got twine? It makes for a super cheap accessory. I love the texture it brings in and that it is a more natural element. I also like to use architectural pieces when accessorizing. I put a bunch of random finials in basket. Works for me.

I blew up the plans from a builder for the artwork. It cost me under $5 at FedEx Kinkos to print them. Sweet. I put them in a really cool frame from Michael's. It looks like printing blocks. They were on clearance so I snatched up a whole bunch of them. I am going to make magnetic boards and chalkboards for my office and to sell at my upcoming art show! I will have to take a close-up photo to show you. They rock!

The hammers on the desk were both thrift store finds. Don't think you can really see them in the photo though. One is an old wood mallet, the other is just a girlie looking hammer for decor. Love it! Notice the JunkMarketStyle.com magazine predominately displayed on the desk. That was my Shout Out to Sue Whitney for providing so much creative inspiration. Can I get a woot woot?

That's about all the tricks I had up my sleeve for decorating this space. Hope something grabbed your attention!

I sniffer far too many paint fumes today, but still had a blast doing it. I can't wait to get my room together.

Friday Favorite - and full of flavor

I came across this tasty little treat posted on The Inspired Room today. I don't know if I am just having PMS or something but I am now craving this jar full of fun.

This looks so darn yummy. They had mentioned that it would make a great hostess gift and they are right on the money with that one. Awesome idea. It would be a cute teacher gift too.

Suitcase Side Table

Pack it up, pack it in

Let me begin

To tell you about the Parade of Homes I'm decoratin'...

OK, I'll stop and spare you from my "white girls can't wrap" rendition of Jump Around. Anyway, my point is that I wanted to share my funky new end table for my Down Home DiY Monday Making project. It is the perfect marriage of a clearance item and rummage sale find.

The suitcase was on clearance, it was scratched, so I touched it up and no one will ever know. The wooden stand was from a rummage sale. I didn't know what I was going to use it for but I knew it would come in handy some day. Well, some day came a knocking and I needed a pretty little side table fast. Thus the fun little marriage between two salvaged pieces.

I love the colors and design on the suitcase and it has extra storage to boot. I used it to decorate for the Parade of Homes. I wanted something light and that could be easily carried. I had a lot of other beefy furniture to carry in. I just put two screws, washers and a couple of nuts in to secure it and I was done. Another easy peasy project.

I will share more pix of the rest of the eclectic little Master Bedroom I decorated later. I made a really cool headboard from a repurposed faux door...you can catch a tiny little corner of it in one of these photos. Stay tuned for more...

Friday Favorite Accessory

As you can see from my latest posts, I am decorating for the Parade of Homes. When I work with a client, I like to pay tribute to the homeowners and family, the people who live in the space. In this case it is the builder. So, I incorporated a lot of unique industrial and hardware accessories throughout the home. This is my favorite.

Check out my napkin ring holders. Industrial goes glam. I love to decorate with the unexpected. So, this is one of my "shout outs" to the builder. He took a lot of time and effort into building the home so the least I could do was to acknowledge and recognize him in my design plan. What do you think??

I got these in the plumbing aisle at the Hardware store. You should have seen the look on the sales associates face when he asked "Can I help you?" They didn't have the vision and looked at me like I had 10 heads. Oh well. So, I was on my own in search of the perfect napkin ring holder. I think this did the trick.

Decorating on a Budget

$20 dresser after an extreme makeover

Have you missed me the last two days? I have been a mad woman working on the Parade of Homes. I am working with River Ridge Builders and their "Green Home". So, of course I couldn't just stage it with my typical furniture. I felt the need to go to local thrift stores, Goodwill stores, Habitat Restores, etc. to find items to reuse, refinish and refresh. Whoa! Big project. I refinished 5 furniture pieces on Saturday alone. Just a few more details and I am done. I will be finished by Friday for sure because the event is Saturday.

I have a cool little decorating tip in this photo that I will share later with close-up photos...
